About IIT Roorkee

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (abbreviated IIT Roorkee) is a technical university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. It is the oldest engineering institution in India and was founded as the College of Civil Engineering in North-Western Provinces in 1847 by the Lieutenant-Governor, James Thomason, in order to train officers and surveyors employed in the construction of the Ganges Canal. In 1854, after the completion of the canal and Thomason's death, it was renamed the Thomason College of Civil Engineering by Proby Cautley, the designer and projector of the canal. It was renamed the University of Roorkee in 1949 and again renamed IIT Roorkee in 2001. The institution has 22 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences, and Management programs with an emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.

Department of Paper and Packaging Technology

Situated at the foothills of the enchanting lower Himalayan ranges of Shiwalik, the city of Saharanpur (Western Uttar Pradesh) is the home to another campus of IIT Roorkee, popularly known as its Saharanpur Campus. The Institute of Paper Technology was established as the School of Paper Technology by the Government of India in 1964, with aid from the Royal Swedish Government. This school was managed by a society created by the U.P. Government until its merger with the then University of Roorkee in 1978. The University of Roorkee was given the status of a university by Act No. IX of 1948 of the United Provinces (Uttar Pradesh). The school was renamed as the Institute of Paper Technology in July 1978. The Institute of Paper Technology was renamed as the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Saharanpur Campus. Saharanpur Campus is a well-planned and developing campus, acquiring 25 acres of land at a distance of around 49 km from the Roorkee campus.

The Department of Paper and Packaging Technology offers a two-year M. Tech. degree in Paper Technology to cater to the needs of the paper and packaging industries, and simultaneously impart knowledge of the allied chemical and process industries. The departmental research activities are tuned with the needs of industry. These include environmental management, energy-efficient processes and material conservation, optimum use of available Indian raw materials for modern pulping and bleaching processes, secondary fiber processing, evaluation of hydrodynamic characteristics of pulp suspension, evaluation of black liquor and improvements in its processing, evaluation of paper surface and printability characteristics, development of proper controls and use of biotechnological applications, development of value-added quality papers, cost reduction studies and waste minimization, and development of lignin by-products and nanotechnology. In addition to this, DPT covers research areas such as electronics and communication, computer science, etc., under the supervision of highly motivated faculty members, who are enthusiastically working towards creating a highly competitive, academic, and research environment in the department.
